Reviewed by: MrBooth Date: 04/27/2005 Summary: 5/10 A manic fantasy wu-xia packed with special effects that still manages to feel rather cheap and shoddy compared to most of Chor Yuen's work - it feels like he wasn't really putting his heart into the job by this point in his career. The sets are very cheap (and too much dry ice is used to try and mask this), lighting is poor, makeup is lousy, props are crap (obvious dolls and mannequins) and the story feels rather cobbled together (using bits of Superman in many places - a fact that wouldn't have escaped attention even if they didn't use a cheap synth knock-off of the Superman theme in places). I really wasn't enjoying this at all for the first half, but then I switched to the Cantonese track from the default Mandarin and it got a lot better - I definitely think Cantonese was the original track, as voice acting seems much better suited to the tone of the film, and generally more professional. It also helped that most of the last 30 minutes is packed full of crazy action scenes, with fireworks and optical effects and almost everything in the world exploding. There's fun to be had if you enjoyed SUPER INFRAMAN or HOLY FLAME OF THE MARTIAL WORLD, but it's a guilty pleasure at best. Reviewer Score: 5

However, into the first 10 minutes of the film, I could already tell it was going to be boring and no-good. Indeed, it's basically a piece of unworthy crap. The story is a drag and has no point of interest what so ever. You can always tell how good a movie is by looking at the box office figures, in which this movie grossed less than HK$1 million, which means it can't be good. The main weakness is the lack of standard kung fu. What makes Holy Flame of the Martial World and the Bastard Swordsman (the most prominent sci-fi SB flicks) work is the actors' abilities to work the martial arts, even though they're fantasy movies as well. But here, there's no decent action at all. The action seems even more old school than movies made 10 years ago. A wasted role for Cherie Cheung. [3/10]

Reviewed by: Gerard Date: 02/21/2000 Erh Tung Sheng stars in this Shaw Brothers tale which you could call the Chinese version of Superman. It contains extensive wire flying and very laborate costumes. Not as much kung fu as you would expect from an early 80's Shaw film, but overall it's a good film to watch.
