Reviewed by: STSH Date: 10/12/2001 Summary: Impressive I rented this film having little idea what it was about, and was glad I did. The story is a bit hard to catch during the first 15 minutes. The opening scene has two painters (Eric Tsang and Tai Bo) working on a large old house with tenants about to move in. Bo vanishes from the story, and Eric only comes back at the end. Then we cut to Wu Ma coming home with a wrapped gift for his wife, whom he catches in the act with her lover. The lover kills the husband, who becomes a ghost. Then a bunch of young women are working as bar hostesses, chatting to some guys. Then we see an escaping prisoner (Cheung Kwok Keung) taking refuge in the house. It is when the story begins to come together and draw you in. I've never taken particular notice of Kwok Keung, but he gives a great performance as the very much wronged Yeung. He is pursued by the prison inspector (Ho Ka Kui), and it looks for a time as if Ho Ho Ho (as I think of him !) is playing a rare good guy role. But, fortunately, Ho is in fine form as a truly despicable character. Apart from a cameo by Billy Lau, the remainder of the cast are not well known. And a word on the credits - the actors are billed in order of appearance. So Eric Tsang and Tai Bo come in first, despite being only cameos. I've tried to sort out the most prominent characters and order them that way, which is why Chan Kwok Keung is listed first. The story has many elements and could have turned out as a confusing mess, but it all fits together very well. Wu Ma's antics, sometimes helping, sometimes hindering, provide an interesting diversion from the determination of Yeung to carry out a plan for revenge, with which his hostage eventually give him help. This film is distributed by a music company, and there is quite a lot of music played prominently. In fact, too prominently to be regarded as backgoudn music. Big parts of this film have an MTV rock-clip feel about them, and this also adds to the succcess of the movie. It's hard to pinpoint just what I found so enjoyable. This is an offbeat ghost movie with generous dashes of humour. Well worth a look. Reviewer Score: 8
