Three Summers

An ambitious but disjointed coming-of-age drama. Three consecutive seasons at an ecological summer camp: the first is boringly blissful (but with a beautiful giant-floating-lantern final scene); the second is dark and twisted (featuring lovely-looking performances by Tony Leung C-W and Veronica Yip, lost, unfortunately, in a seemingly arbitrary subplot); the third is just an abrupt resolution. Earnest, but it didn't meet my expectations, given the first rate cast and crew. See it for the cinematography, maybe.

Tony Leung Chiu-Wai is the older brother, A-wai, who has suddenly returnedto his family's rural island from HK. The younger teenaged sister, Mai-tao, looks up to her brother and is unaware of his secret. Summer visitors, led by 'Mr. and Mrs. Veggie' (could be a subtitle mishap), return every year during Mai-Tao's adolescence. Eventually Mai-tao will also go to HK. This was probably only the fifth HK film I saw in a Cantonese theatre, and I thought it was somewhat overwrought at the time. I do recall being impressed by the location and by Tony Leung Chiu-Wai. I don't know which roles were played by Veronica Yip and Ng Sin Lin.
