Because of Lies

Summary: Worth a damn

This movie is definitely good, just not necessarily great.

Simon Yam and Yu Li are unlikely partners in this off beat triad drama. The comedy works, the characters are appealing enough, but it loses steam after the second half.
If you can forgive its lack of thrills, Because of Lies is worth a look.

A chain of circumstances brings neighbors Lung and Shirley into eachother's lives. Small time gangster Lung is trying to save money to open up a noodle shop with his friend Ho B Jai (Ho Siu B in subtitles), while caring for his son at the same time. Shirley juggles a career and her impending marriage while caring for her senile mother. But every time things start to work out fate steps in and gives us another ten minutes of melodrama. A little more focus would have helped this movie a lot.

Ah Lung (Simon Yam) is the #2 man in a small triad gang, and his six-year old son patches him up when nights get out of hand; Shirley Kee (Yu Li) is the drop-dead gorgeous clothing designer who lives next door. Lung needs $200,000 to go legitimate and open a "glutinous rice bun factory" (those strange triangular rolls you see in Chinese bakeries wrapped up in leaves -- they're really quite good) with a pal, and is about to lose custody of his son; Kee is engaged to a two-timing yuppie lout, and her live-in mom has Parkinson's Disease. Mutual favors eventually has them drinking beer from wine glasses at her apartment. He's horny; she's generously hung. One thing fits into another. The ending is completely unpredictable -- a double-twister that's at first amazing, then preposterous (like many of the human elements of this film), finally demonstrating what a really good-looking gal can do to make a mediocre drama tolerable.
