Reviewed by: ryan Date: 11/21/1999 Summary: Your Call or Mine (1999) Director TO Pak-hon, a noted director from the 80s, is now helping with Winners' Category III productions. However, his previous film, 'Arousment' (1999), was a poor production. If you thought the previous movie was the worst production from Winners, your answer is incorrect, because we have a new champion, TO Pak-hon's 'Your Call or Mine.' I regret that it is hard for me to write a plot summary for 'Your Call or Mine,' as the entire movie is very unorganized. You can find all of the problems for Winners productions exemplified in this movie -- redundant scenes, weird editing, lack of continunity and poor acting. For those who can tolerate poor productions, you may wish to watch the first ten minutes of 'Your Call or Mine' to challenge your ability. The first 3' 20' contains some night time fighting scenes. The interesting thing is that there is no dialogue during the fights. It looks like pure acting, but you cannot identify any of the characters in the fight scenes. You may find it more interesting to watch dogs fight the park. This stuff can be cut. Then you see a sudden edit to a phone call, from a big brother HO (HO Ka-kui), where he talks about something difficult to understand for a minute. A few seconds thereafter, the film suddenly switches to a love making scene between HO Ka-kui and a unknown girl. The edit is hard to accept, as the two sub-plots have no connection. Sadly, you find this happens throughout the movie. Somewhere within the plotline is a theme about a group of police officers dealing with triad and drug cases. However, it is very hard to understand why director TO includes the training of police officers twice over in the movie. The inclusion of the training of these officers adds nothing to the movie, except to make it longer, undecipherable and annoying. In addition to these bad features, the cinematography is also very poor. You can't see the movie clearly. Maybe this is one of the techniques they use to veil their poor filmmaking. They are so lazy that they even skip the basic method of presenting the main plot. For example, there is a sub-plot where Brother Wai reads Lily's diary. I expected the camera to, at least, zoom in on the diary, or have Wai whisper the contents. However, they did nothing to clarify the scene. Such failure cannot be accepted. 'Your Call or Mine' is a shame in Hong Kong movies. In any aspect, the movie is a stinker. There are tons of redundant sub-plots, poor and nonsensical editing, unfathomable story, poor acting and horrible cinematography. This is aready TO Pak-hon's second film since returning to HK Cinema, but his skills are even worse than for a new director. He's unsuited to make movies anymore, unless he improves his extremely poor skills.
