Summary: Immortal Spirit (1999)

In newspapers in Macau, LAW Shun-chuen claimed to ask for suvivial for his 'Immortal Spirit'. In fact, he got loan from the bank by putting his apartment as the exchange, hoping this would be his another miracle after his successful 'Girls in the Hood' (1995).

The story of 'Immortal Spirit' sounds like a romantic story between a police directorate (Michael WONG Man-tak) and ex-girl theft friend (WONG Pui-ha). WONG was died in one robbery while her soul did not die for two reasons -- she suspect WONG shot her and she couldn't forget the love to WONG. Subsequently she would like to have revenge action by taking Police officer HO Wah-chiu's body.

In terms of ideas, 'Immortal Spirit' can be something very romantic and impressive. However, by watching 'Immortal Spirit', it seems to me that the movie can be much more impressive than the present product. One of the main problems is that there are not enough elaborations on the main issues -- The relationship between HO Wah-chiu, WONG Pui-ha and HO's wife is helping WONG; the relationship between Michael WONG, Almen WONG and WONG's wife (Christine ENG Wing-mei); the love of Almen to Michael.

Talking about the relationship between Chritine ENG Wing-mei and Michael WONG and Michael and Almen. 'Immortal Spirit' adds some sexy memories of Michael and Almen while Almen is in HO's body. This adds no value to make the movie impressive nor romantic but erotic. The description on Michael WONG's feeling is also too pale for audience to feel that he is a irresponsive guy. Maybe the movie can describe a bit how he can climb up at his directorate position by flashing some images which can made the whole stuff stronger.

When talking about the revenge, it seems that 'Immortal Spirit' would like to present with levels of fear towards Michael WONG. Unfortunately, this does not work in the movie. Music scores may be one of the reasons but the unmatch of music also accounts. For some of the scenes, you can find that the music comes before the dialogues which can't raise audience feeling.

Another main weakness of te movie is that the dubbed voices made you feel very uncomfortable. Dubbed voice already discounts the overall grading of the movie, but more embrassing thing is that the voices dubbed are not their own voices. Wort of all, you can hear Michael WONG was dubbed by a guy speaks fulent Cantonese. This makes audience extremely hard to get into the movie.

In short, 'Immortal Spirit' is a movie with ideas which can be very impressive and romantic. Unfortunately, poor presentation plus dubbed voice results in the failure to achieve its objective.
