We have an example of that with Hero of City, which is basically a remake of Quentin Tarantino's debut Reservoir Dogs, which, of course, was itself "inspired" by Ringo Lam's City on Fire. Making things even goofier is that Danny Lee appears in both City on Fire and Hero of City. Despite the interesting premise (Lam Suet filling in Steve Buscemi's role? Yes please.) director Alan Lo's limp execution makes this a tedious experience to sit through. Reviewer Score: 4

Reviewed by: Inner Strength Date: 07/18/2002 Summary: Quite good One of the few gritty triad films from last year (2001), which has little new to offer unfortunately, but that’s not to say it’s not good. The story is basically about a cop (what a surprise!) who takes on the task to try to track down a gang consisting of some of the most dangerous criminals in Hong Kong who have formed together an ultimate unstoppable gang. That is until Danny Lee tracks them down. The plot probably reminds most people of ‘City on Fire’ (a personal favourite of mine) and there are plenty more subtle scenes very reminiscent of scenes in that film. Turns out that one of the criminals is actually a cop, which is again straight from City on Fire. It’s certainly nothing original, but it is surprisingly very entertaining and real nail biting stuff at times. For Law Shun Chuen, this is probably the best film he’s done, and is probably comparable to his ’95 ‘Girls in the Hood’, which although I didn’t like, it did have some memorable work and nicely put together. Law Shun Chuen is one of these directors that likes clever camera work, and this film like his others displays plenty of them. Danny Lee’s performance is pretty good, and although his role is the same old thing he’s done for the last 20 years, he’s still got it. Same can be said for Blacky Ko, who has been performing more and more as a main actor in the last few years, which is good to see from one of the best stunt men still around in HK. All in all, a reasonable action/crime film, offering very little in originality but still good enough to prove that this genre is still as strong as it always was, and I’m sure we can expect to see plenty more of these films in the years to come. My rating should probably be lower I think, because of the fact that little thought probably went into this production. Speaking of productions, this is actually pretty poorly funded I think, as the overall quality of the film is quite poor. Still, anyone who just wants to see a recent action film which is entertaining, then this is probably one the best that have been released over the last few years. [3.5/5]
