Shanghai native Lisa Lu could well have been one of the earliest Chinese acting talents to make the great trans-Pacific crossing and carve her mark in Hollywood. Lu took the road to fame when she moved to the United States in 1947. In the US, Lu worked as a Chinese tutor for high school students, a magazine reporter as well as radio programme host. Later, Lu attended the renowned Pasadena Playhouse to study performing arts. Her big break came in 1958 when Lu went on to star opposite James Stewart in "The Mountain Road". Lu returned to the Far East in the 70's at the invite of directors and Shaw Brothers. Among her more outstanding works in Asia were 1972's "The Arch" (for which she was named best actress at the 9th Golden Horse Film Awards in Taiwan) and "The 14 Amazons", for which she won the best supporting actress award at the 11th Golden Horse Awards. Her winning streak did not stop there. In 1975, she won the best actress Golden Horse Award again for her role in Li Han-Hsiang's "The Empress Dowager".
