With origins in Shantung, Liu Hsueh-Hua was born in Beijing on November 12, 1959. In 1978 she joined the Great Wall Film Production Limited. She simultaneously trained and appeared in movies. She caught the public's eye with "Affairs", and in the thriller "Innocence", her detailed delineation of a complex character earned her wide acclaims.

At Great Wall, Liu established a fresh and unconventional image for herself. She was one of the company's 4 starlets. After her contract ended, she joined Shaw Brothers, and appeared mostly in martial arts movies such as "Holy Flame of the Martial World", "Bastard Swordsman", etc. She is endowed with great acting skills, and her versatile adaptation to different roles made her a prominent star.

In 1984 Liu developed her career in TV. She starred in the "Young Empress Dowager" of ATV where she played the role of the Empress Dowager from young adult to middle-aged. Next year, Taiwan novelist Qiong Yao invited her to star opposite Chin Han in the screen adaptation of "Many Enchanting Nights" and was very popular with a wide range of audiences. She has subsequently starred in a number of TV dramas adapted from Qiong Yao's novels, and the trio of Liu, Chin and Qiong quickly became the hottest sensation across the Greater China and Southeast Asia.
