From down under (not to mention the cover of one national Canadian daily :? ):

The 'Pumpkin' Mystery:
Police seek father, fear for missing mother, as toddler found at train station
http://www.canada.com/nationalpost/news ... bd24b4afb8

Security images showed the girl -- later identified as Qian Xun Xue -- being led by her father, Nai Zin Xue, a 54-year-old martial arts expert and magazine publisher. Mr. Xue, who was pulling a black suitcase on wheels, left the station without his daughter and was seen boarding a flight to the United States.

In a short documentary made by Hang Xie, a New Zealand university film student, he said his [older] daughter, then aged 17, vanished while he was on a martial arts trip to the United States. "I lost you. I feel such guilt," he says in the film. "I put my career first. I was selfish.

EDIT: The mystery becomes a murder investigation, with the "body under cops' noses for two days":

I've following the Pumpkin story with fascination the past few days. So many angles on it. Did you read where the wife had moved in with a secret lover she had met through a dating service? And Mr Xue's credentials as a sifu were suspect when his background was investigated.

Quite the story. If this had happened in Hong Kong about 15 years ago, we'd have seen the movie version two weeks later. The second and third links in my previous posts contain a zillion sidebar stories that really make for some fascinating reading. I'd love to get a copy of the "sifu's" book where he talks endlessly about the miracle that was himself. Gotta wonder if the little girl won't be better off in the long run, but either way, it's sad that it happened while she was so young. Hopefully young enough to forget as time goes on...
