Inner demons hell for detective
Mad Detective reviewed

IS he mad or just plain brilliant? Bun (Lau Ching Wan) is a gifted criminal profiler who always gets his man through unconventional methods. But he is finally considered “off his rocker” when he cuts off his ear and offers it to his superior as a retirement gift.

Living in seclusion with his wife May (Kelly Lin), he nevertheless comes out of retirement when approached for help by young cop Ho (Andy On).

A police gun has been implicated in a series of robberies and murders. Its owner vanished during a mission in which his partner Wai (Lam Ka Tung) survived.

Having been on Bun’s team when he first joined the force, Ho believes his former boss has something unique going for him, but he soon feels that he has bitten off more than he can chew.
Bun goes into action and declares that Wai has seven inner demons governing him into committing crimes. However, when clues seem to clear Wai, Ho begins to have his doubts about Bun.

What began as a quest to solve a crime becomes a journey where truth and lies, reality and delusions, intertwine.

Initially, I thought this would be another crazy Hong Kong comedy. But it was a pleasant surprise to find it refreshingly different from the regular Hong Kong fare and an absolutely intriguing watch.

With his dishevelled look and messy demeanour, Lau Ching Wan still turns out to be a gem to watch. It is totally believable to deem him mad, yet he has that confidence and conviction which tells you otherwise.

You might have to pay extra attention when watching this movie because with inner devils appearing alongside the ordinary guys on the street, it could be a tad confusing trying to differentiate what is real and what is not. But that is actually part of the fun here.

The haul of fake designer goods was so large police were forced to call in extra trucks to transport it and piled up stacks of designer handbags, jeans, top-end sneakers, jewellry, sunglasses, baseball caps and dozens of other items in a storage room in the basement of 52 Division headquarters.
