Kenny Bee's marriage woes
It was like sleeping with the ENEMY

THAT was how Kenny Bee felt about his ex-wife Teresa Cheung before their bitter divorce.

The Hong Kong singer-actor revealed that in his autobiography Macdonnell Road, named after the street where he grew up, which was launched in Hong Kong last Monday.

He may have dished the dirt on her in his 200-page book, but he told The New Paper over the phone that he was not out to smear her name.

Kenny added that out of the 100,000 words in the book, he had only devoted 'a few thousand' to Teresa.

'The first half of my life was also very colourful as well, so it's not all about her. But I cannot skip over that chapter in my life as well,' he explained.

The Chinese-language book, which costs HK$88 ($16) and is available online from his music label's website (http://www.bma.com.hk/), tells of the ups and downs in his life, from his childhood days and happy times with his band The Wynners to his bankruptcy and divorce.

An English-language version is being planned for next year.

Kenny, 54, and Teresa, 44, had married in 1988 after a 21-day whirlwind courtship.

However, the couple allegedly quarrelled frequently over her extravagance.

In 1996, Teresa was widely-rumoured to have had an affair with businessman Edmund Chan, a family friend of theirs.

The next year, the Bees found themselves in debt after the property market collapsed.

They divorced in 1999 and share custody of their two children, Nicholas, 17, and Lauren, 12.

Kenny filed for bankruptcy in 2002 and was only discharged last year.

He is currently living with his Taiwanese girlfriend Fan Chiang, with whom he has a daughter.

According to Hong Kong papers which cited passages from his book, Kenny had painted Teresa as a heartless woman.

He wrote: 'She was holding on to a picture that she had taken with Mr Chan at a restaurant in Paris, without regard for me...

'I couldn't stand it, I took my guitar and sang my heart out. I have cried...

'Every night, I seem to be sleeping with the enemy... How could I continue to sleep in peace next to her?'

Kenny also accused his former wife of having no qualms about hiding her affairs from him.

'At that time, I saw a shocking scene from my car's rear view mirror. I actually saw Teresa and Mr Chan walking out of our house hand in hand...

'I kept telling myself 'Forget it! Treat it as I didn't see it! Maybe I saw wrongly!',' he wrote.

Wasn't it humiliating to admit in his book that he was a cuckold?

He told The New Paper: 'It's not embarrassing because the whole world knew about it. In fact, I was the last to know!'

Kenny revealed in the book that Teresa was so vain and materialistic, she would often dream of shopping and would cry out 'So beautiful! So beautiful!' in her sleep.

Kenny also chided Teresa for acting in the racy Category III film Colour Blossoms in 2004.

He added: 'Lauren didn't want to go to school... she was often laughed at by her classmates and was very emotional. Her results suffered.

'Nicholas also said he and his friends didn't understand why his mother had to act in such a movie. I told them 'This is her business, not mine!'.'

Wasn't Kenny afraid that Teresa - who relocated to Los Angeles last year - would strike back or sue him for what he has written?

He simply said: 'We cannot assume anything.'

Now, he is looking forward to the launch of his personal brand of guitars early next year, as well as a solo concert tour next March which will bring him to Singapore.

'I guess I'm smarter now, clearer about the things I do and more careful with people.'

Are either of these kids actually Teresa Cheung's, or are they his from a previous marriage? Their ages seem to pre-date Kenny Bee's relationship with her.

I don't follow your math. They were married 19 years ago and separated 8 years ago. In between, are the kids 17 and 12 years old, born in 1990 and 1995 respectively. So 1988 - married, 1990 - Nicholas born, 1995 - Lauren born, 1999 - divorced.

My bad! I assumed, rather blindly, that those were the ages of the kids when they divorced, rather than now. You'd think having gone to J-school, I'd be able to figure out the usage.
