Magic Boy
Cinema: Magic in the air

Hong Kong director Adam Wong explores the wonders of illusion and childhood in Magic Boy. SHARON WONG writes. ADD a little romance to your life this Chinese New Year with Hong Kong director Adam Wong’s Magic Boy.

A youth romance set in Mongkok, it revolves around a girl who has to make a choice between two magicians — one’s into professional stage magic while the other is fun-loving and incorporates street magic into his everyday life.

“Magic Boy is a movie about growing up,” said Wong.

It also explores whether it is possible to retain a youthful nature.

Wong himself is hard-pressed to give an answer, and said that the subject is food for thought. “I hope that the audience would be able to relive their childhood happiness through the movie.”

Magic Boy is the first Hong Kong movie to use magic as its theme and Wong said that he has always liked illusion.

“This is not Harry Porter magic,” he said. “Rather, it’s everyday life. I prefer to discover magical elements in our daily life.”

More than 30 magic tricks were performed in the movie which introduces newcomer Anjo Leung, a real student of magic.

“Anjo was among the audience at my last movie, When Beckham Met Owen. We met during a forum on the movie. He was involved in Magic Boy from the writing of the screenplay to the magic tricks.

“We had high expectations of him and he didn’t disappoint. He’s a natural on screen. And so are Chui Tien You and Kate Leung. I’ve seen their previous work, how natural they are.”

Kate, who has appeared in movies such as Eternal Summer and The Eye 10, said that there was no pressure during the filming of Magic Boy.

“This is a happy movie and we had a happy time on the set. Things were smooth going,” she said.

“Although this is a light-hearted movie, it took a year — including rehearsals — to complete and we have put in much effort.”

Leung, who admitted that she is rather mischievous, revealed that it was difficult for her to quiet down on the set as she needs to remain active or she would fall asleep.

While in such close proximity with magicians, she picked up some magic tricks but insisted that she has no talent for it.

“I had to perform a trick at the end of the movie and it took me a week to learn. I practised so hard, I had cramps in my fingers,” she said.

Kate feels that magic serves as an ice-breaker.

“It is a great communication tool.”

Although magic can get people’s attention, Tien You insists that you can’t use it to court girls. “It doesn’t work,” he said, laughing.

“Ultimately, it is whether you have the heart and the sincerity — that is explained in the movie.”

Tien You, who is a professional stage magician in the movie, had three months of training in the art, which made him realise that there is more to magic than meets the eye.

“Initially, I thought being a magician would be fun,” he said. “But then, I realised that I have no talent for it and have to work hard to make it work.

“Fortunately, there’s Anjo, who has been dabbling in magic since the age of three or four.

“I would call him up whenever I had a problem.”

Tien You, who is part of the Hong Kong duo Shine, said that although he is concentrating on acting at the moment, it does not mean that he is giving up music.

“It’s just that there are no plans for Shine to release a album yet,” he said.

“And we are both focusing on our individual careers for the time being.”

This has been going on for a couple of weeks now. They still have two weeks of new releases to make available: "Best of Martial Arts" and "The Award Winners."

http://www.jaman.com/a/download/?f=fortune-star

From the looks of it, the titles are only available temporarily, which is a shame as there's some really good stuff there, especially for newcomers to Hong Kong cinema. And considering the diminishing returns most of these titles will face with DVDs from here on out, I hope Fortune Star (and other companies) will consider the download option more seriously if they want to attract new generations of viewers to these fantastic films.
