'Woh Gwing'?

Postby kenichiku » Fri May 02, 2008 6:45 am

Greetings for bloggings sake...Sorry just couldn't help but to butt in here for this entry. I don't know what dialect one of your editors used for building his romanized name but it kinda fell short for his Canto name (somebody seemed to have got it right for Mando though):

This old-school extra slash stunt-guy's stage name is "He Shang" = "Monk"; don't you get it? Wouldn't "Woh Seung" work, perhaps? Those Chinese challenged who wish to verify can survey the character set for any film that directly translates the word 'monk' or 'abbot' in the title and you'll see what i mean. Cheers. :) Good see you guys again.

Looks like some initial character table translation error maybe?

Chan Gwing-Chi / (陳尚志)

Gwing Chi-Gwoh / (尚止戈)

Gwing Ching / (å°šè

Gwing Schwing II

Postby kenichiku » Thu May 08, 2008 4:39 am

Oh my, looks like you hit the jackpot there. 'Seung' (Canto) = 'Shang' (Mando) is the only pronunciation I know this word to be. As a kid, this Chinese school underachiever's still got the backhand & yardstick scars from overzealous Nazi-Chinese Catholic nuns to prove it (& you shoulda seen the damage I caused when armed with a calligraphy brush & vat of Indian ink on the whites of a nun's habit but that's another story, hehe).

Can you guys do a system-wide data edit & replace? I'm afraid 'Gwing' is bogus in this context....and I'm afraid there are more such words. A Gwing and a prayer, Buffalo Gwings, Gwingless Bat....the list goes on.

Not sure if this is a similar case but I noticed that some actors with surname ä½™, they are "Chui" in the English db instead of "Yu". I doubt whether it's mixed up with another common surname å¾

If no one objects, I will convert Gwing to Seung, manually. Only Spencer Lam Seung-Yi seems to have a legitimate Gwing as an alias (Lam Gwing-Ye), according to the HKFA You Shoot, I Shoot entry.
