Stand-in used for Takeshi Kaneshiro after contract expires
The US$80 million ($11m) movie is possibly the largest Asian production ever.
The epic film, based on events during the Three Kingdoms period in ancient China, is divided into two episodes, with the first due to be released before the Olympic Games in August.
It stars big names Tony Leung and Takeshi Kaneshiro, as well as actress Vicki Zhao and supermodel Lin Chiling.
The star-studded cast has also led to problems though.
In May, for example, the Apple Daily reported that Takeshi, who plays military strategist Zhuge Liang, was unhappy with the screenplay.
He reportedly argued with Woo over issues like having to wear armour. Takeshi felt that a strategist would not be armoured.
Takeshi also left before filming was completed as his contract had expired and he was involved in the Japanese fantasy film, Accuracy Of Death.
Because of his departure, some scenes had to be shot with a stand-in.
The Japanese actor also excused himself from taking part in the publicity for Red Cliff at Cannes.
The reason he gave was that he was working on a Japanese crime film, K-20.
