Titles in John's first post that are linked at YesAsia do have VCD release dates, and since many of these were likely direct-to-video, that might be as close as we can get until someone can find/buy these and post screencaps. Buyoyo, as usual, is pretty slim on details.

The mainland titles in John's second post will be much trickier, since the films do seem much older than the YesAsia release dates of their VCDs. :(

Brian is absolutely right. That's exactly how this is going to get done. VCD release dates.

I'm not comfortable with using video release dates as a practice. Maybe in a very limited case for direct-to-video titles (not sure how that can be ascertained vs a TV movie). The problem is that it's not reliable at all. Smaller companies like Modern Audio, and Kam and Ronson will acquire and reissue titles after another company has previously released them. Garry's Trading Co. is another example and Winson, Century/China Art do the same for older titles. Ying e Chi releases aren't necessarily current titles. And Fan Hall is a similar art film distributor that distributes small mainland films.

In any case, it should at least be noted (in summary box?) that the date is a Guess or based on vcd release date lest anyone think it's a fact or later come across more definitive information.

VCD/DVD Release dates should only be used as a "latest possible year".

We need to first look for evidence of a cinema release date (excluding the special cases of direct-to-video and TV, as dlee mentions).

If this cannot be found, we go to information from people who know the movie or actors (Fan and Kenchiku have been exemplary in providing such info) or estimated years (which need to be done carefully if at all).

If anyone wishes to continue this discussion, please split off to a separate thread.

Director Cheung Hoi (2) credited with 2 movies, made 1996 and 1997.
Added with estimated year.

Wong Ching-Lam's known films span 1982-97.
Lai Sai not listed.
Probably early 1990s, when WCL was churning them out, but not yet enough data to estimate a year.

No year. No data to estimate a year.

This was my point, actually. I probably should have suggested that suspect dates be noted in the manner they often are now, with a little tag at the bottom of the DB entry that says "1992 is an estimated year of release" etc. I realize that even this method won't work on some of the obviously older films in John's lists here--where what appears to be a movie from the 60s or 70s has a VCD release date of 2001--but at least we have these links to come back to from time to time. ;)
