Joey Tang vs. Joey Tang?

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Fri Oct 30, 2009 6:08 am

Tricky one here. ;)

In figuring out the composers of the music for THE WARNING TIME (2000), and trying to deduce who performs the theme song, I think I found a boo-boo in the DB.

"Original Music" in THE WARNING TIME is credited to Joey Tang and Patrick Liu, as per this screen:

The theme song is performed by a group called ?? (Arctic? Doesn't ring a bell . . . :( )

This group seems to be comprised of ???, or Tang Kin-ming (aka JOEY TANG) and ???, or Liu/Lau Yin-tak, who I'm betting is Patrick Liu.

Here's the problem. In Joey Tang Kin-ming's DB entry, at least one film, LOVE @ FIRST NOTE (2006), identifies the performer as a girl ("herself").

According to a search at YesAsia, Joey Tang Kin-ming is a dude:

More albums at Buyoyo:
http://www.buyoyo.com/buyoyo/eng/Produc ... 3&prtype=4
http://www.buyoyo.com/buyoyo/eng/Produc ... 5&prtype=4
Here he is live in concert:

and in a music video duet with Dennie Wong (who can now be ID'd as a female in the DB ;) ):

The singer of the theme song for THE WARNING TIME is also a dude. And he sounds a LOT like the guy in those videos.

I seem to (vaguely) recall a Joey Tang in LOVE @ FIRST NOTE, possibly one of the young female singers who goes unnamed in the picture gallery for that film, such as this gal, possibly? (can't say for sure)

So I'm wondering if there needs to be a split. I may need to skim the credits of LOVE @ FIRST NOTE to see if the male Joey Tang might be in that film after all.

The HKFA entry doesn't say 'herself' but his/her name, i.e., Tang Kin-Ming (as Tang Kin-Ming). This would seem to indicate that Tang Kin-Ming is someone of note and not just anyone named Tang Kin-Ming. So, is there a female Tang Kin-Ming of note?

Also , four band members are credited in LOVE @ FIRST NOTE unless that's a different band in the film.

I don't know of any female Tang Kin-ming of note, certainly not any singers (though admittedly I'm no cantopop expert, but I try to keep up).

I think my own confusion stems from the credit uploads I did here in the forum for LOVE a loooong time ago. I could've sworn at the time that the girl on stage (in that photo linked above) or some other female singer/secondary character was called "Joey" on screen (character name, presumably), and knowing the tendency for HK film characters to sometimes have the same or similar names as the performers playing them, my mind may have connected the two. HOWEVER, I don't recall adding character names to the cast list for LOVE @ FIRST NOTE, so I'm not sure where "herself" came from, although like you say, the credits clearly say "Tang King-ming as Tang Kin-ming" or whatever, so if someone already assumed (possibly incorrectly) that it was a girl based on our existing DB entry, "herself" would have been an understandable choice.

In Joey Tang Kin-ming's DB entry, however, there's a role in TWINKLE TWINKLE LUCKY STAR (1996) as "one of the fairies". Perhaps someone who has seen this film might be able to tell us if one or all of the "fairies" in that film were played by guys or girls. :? The role as a "guard" in GEN-Y COPS sounds likely to have been played by a male performer, but I'm not sure I can revisit that film to find out as it would require a smooth remote control hand to make sure I could skip past every scene involving Edison Chen. :P

My hunch here is that the Joey Tang Kin-ming in the DB is a male, and is in fact the real-life singer. He played a "fairie" in the LUCKY STAR movie, and played a character named "Tang Kin-ming" (possibly himself) in LOVE @ FIRST NOTE,. There is a female character named Joey in LOVE, but she's not Tang Kin-ming. Just a theory of course, unless more info can be found.

Our credits list Michael Miu and Joe Junior as faeries as well as Danny Chung, too.

So, to recap, the only evidence of another Joey Tang is the 'herself' reference?

Joey NoLastName in HKFA links to 3 music-related credits and the one Gen Y Cops role.

Also, Joey Tang and (Dennie) Wong Dan-Yee CD - gender updated.

Getting tougher to argue that Tang is a "she" considering two of those three guys are pop singers just like Joey Tang. Seems like a bit of wink-wink casting to me.

As far as I can tell, yes.

I'm betting that's still our guy.

Thanks. That's the CD that prompted me to look on YouTube for possible videos. The duet video linked above is for a song that shows up on at least three compilations I have (it may have been in a movie as well), so it's nice to finally put faces to the voices! 8)

Thanks. Great find! 8)

Once the credits for THE WARNING TIME are updated from the other thread here, we should also have a listing for Patrick Lui as well. Interesting that these two would do the music for such a small scale production, but perhaps they're friends with Vincent Wan or the producer.

I'll give the LOVE @ FIRST NOTE disc a spin some day soon to see if there's anything fishy with that girl named Joey on screen, or if I was just hearing things all along.
