DB Title Update: THE HONG KONG HAPPY MAN II (2000)

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Mon Mar 08, 2010 8:53 am

I think I may have uploaded these credits a long time ago, but if so, they were probably linked to my photobucket and have long since been deleted. These new ones are now in the DB galleries for the film. Doubt they contain any info we don't already have, but just in case:

Also added a gallery: http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/images.mhtml ... ay_set=eng

This film has NO closing credits, but is loaded with familiar faces (or maybe they're just familiar to me from so many B-movies?).

Fairly convinced this guy is Tenky Tin:

EDIT: Guess not! Looks like someone else is doing edits almost as fast as I upload, and has ID'd this guy as Ng Shui-ting. Good call!

Farini Cheung?

Lee Ho-kwan? With a few extra pounds?

Also, Lau Siu-gwan is in the DB cast list, but not in the credits above. Not sure I see him in the gallery either, and it's virtually complete. :?

Incidentally, I watched both HAPPY MAN movies tonight. Though hardly a classic, this one is a big improvement over the dirty-old-man antics of the first one. The Chinese titles are considerably different on these films, as are the casts (except for Joe Ma) and storylines, suggesting that this one isn't really a sequel at all, except in English name only.

Further to the Ng Shui-ting thing, now when I look at his full gallery, I'm wondering if this is really him in THE WARNING TIME. I mean, it sure looks close, especially around the ear, but his makeup must've been layered on thick . . .

Ng from HONG KONG HAPPY MAN II again:

He seems an awful lot younger in WARNING TIME, which is weird considering the two films were made the same year. :?

Added front and back scans of the VCD cover. Posterized both and set the front cover to be the DB listing's poster image.

I'm wondering if there's any additional info we can take from these:

The back of the sleeve lists Lee Ming-ching (1) in the credits near the top. Our DB says she's a girl (how did we know that? Is it inherent in the name?). You'll notice there's some bracketed text after her name ("1999" followed by five Chinese characters - perhaps an pageant award winner of some sort?). If someone could translate that, it might help us make a proper ID. I did a search of this name and came up with this site (http://www.qingdaobaby.com/htmlp1/11181540102006.html) which has a photo of a woman who bears a slight resemblance to one of the actresses in the HAPPY MAN II cast, but my computer won't display the text properly so I have no idea if she's even remotely related to the entertainment field. Not much to go on, but hopefully we can figure it out one of these days . . . ;) Also, any chance that Lee Ming-ching (1) and Lee Ming-ching (2) (http://www.hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mht ... ay_set=eng) are the same person?

Thanks for the translation. I'm leaning toward this being Lee Ming-ching because she's got a prominent role in the movie and is in very good shape. Purely speculation at this point, so I'll keep digging . . .

I just noticed the listing for this film sports two ratings, Category IIB and Category III. I don't recall if both have been there all along, but I'm wondering if anyone is aware of the existence of a IIB version. The VCD, as per the sleeve scan above, is Category III, and certainly this version contains one scene in particular that probably earned it that rating—a girl-girl shower scene rather crudely cut into the picture to represent what a supporting character sees when he peeks over the wall in a women's change room at a resort. Considering the cast in this one isn't exactly crawling with Category III mainstays, I have to wonder if there exists a cleaner version without this scene, or whether director Lau Siu-gwan simply stuck it into an cheeky, bikini-rich, but otherwise nudity-free movie in order to sell more VCDs! ;) YesAsia has a DVD version (http://www.yesasia.com/global/the-hong- ... /info.html), but in addition to crediting two performers (Lau Sek-ming and Bessie Chan) who don't actually appear in the movie, they don't list a running time or a rating. :(

He is either Kenji Hong Yat-Kin or Hung Gak-Chi.
Ng Shui-Ting does appear in a cameo role (white shirt).

Removed character ID of "Den" from Ng Shui-ting in WARNING TIME. That ID belongs to the guy pictured above, as I recall, so when we can ID him for sure, I'll add it back.

Can't recall if I brought this up elsewhere, so I'm reviving this thread for another possible ID.

This actress (a speaking part) from HONG KONG HAPPY MAN II:

. . . looks a lot like Miu Yin-wai, from the legendary Bond's Angels DTV series (CRUEL ZONE, WHO'S THE ASSASSIN, CYBER WAR):

I'm 100% convinced, but I'm hoping others here might concur. :D

NOTE:

I also added Farini Cheung's name to all HONG KONG HAPPY MAN portraits and scenes that feature her. ;)
