Koreans Update Project - Hong Seong-yeong
https://hkmdb.com/db/people/view.mhtml?id=84366&complete_credits=1&display_set=eng

It's been a little while since I've done one of these “big guys” that don't have a single ID yet. But there are plenty of people that have one or two IDs already but need huge updates or even some corrections (even the biggest stars like HJR and Wang Ho etc.), so I might do some of them at some point. I even have some that I'm halfway through with, but they'll have to wait until after my long overdue (yet again) break.

He actually had two pages on HKMDB already but both with no ID's. A great example of how annoying it can be when it comes to some Korean names and their variations. At first I thought it be down to mixed up Hanja, but this issues persisted (and actually got worse) during the early 90s. It mostly came down to the film makes being lazy or indifferent when it came to getting the names right for actors who weren't the star. Anyway, I've merged the two pages.

Hong Seong-yeong: Golden Dragon, Silver Snake [1980]; Warriors Of Kung Fu [1982]; Dragon Against Vampire [1985] (other info: DOB 1959; Hong Sung-young; South Korea; male)

Hong Seong-ryong: The Story Of Murim Wicked Man [1980]; The Snake Strikes Back [1980]; Kwangdong Viper [1983] (other info: Hong Seong-yong; 洪成龍 ; South Korea)

I seem to have had an unintentional theme going on with several of my last updates, that being the actors are some of the best gymnasts of their era, and Hong Seong-yeong is another one. Also similar to Yoo Chang-guk, he was often used as a stunt double, including for actresses on The 18 Amazones [1979], which also had fan favourite Won Jin doing the same thing.

Western fans of Korean martial arts films will probably recognise him, as luckily he's actually featured in many of the films released by Asso and IFD, especially the ones that feature footage from the films of Kim Shi-hyeon. It also helps that he has quite distinctive hair, curly and usually quite large, which is not too common among Koreans.

Again, like several others I've covered recently, he had good kicks, flips and could use a variety of weapons, and he could often be seen playing multiple roles in his films. But he's actually had a better run than most, though not becoming a major star, he's had plenty of prominent roles as side characters, often playing the main henchman of the villain or even a side-kick of the hero.

Further evidence of his talent is that he remained in the industry for much longer than most, from the mid 70s through to the early 2000's, and even getting the opportunity to produce a few films later in his career. His seems to be one of the better stories within the Korean martial arts film industry.

I added his full DOB; a few aliases; and IDs for all available films.

And AGAIN, similar to Yoo Chang-guk, I actually have more to say about this guy, so there will eventually be a bio too.

Again good work.

After creating my cast page of "Ling Tong Qian Nu " I asked myself where I knew the face from - now I know :D

Thanks. Always happy to know my research is being of use.

Actually, you might be able to answer a small question I have wondered about in regard to Ling Tong Qian Nu, since I only have the TNK film, not the original. In the original, does Nam Koong-ho have more to do, or is it still just that one scene at the cafe, where the vampire kids steal his meal?

Cheers
