Mr Funny Bones (Master Q/Cute) under the Christmas Tree?

Postby dleedlee » Mon Sep 27, 2004 3:11 pm

I realize probably no one here has seen Mr Funny Bones. :(
But I was rewatching the first half last night and it struck me that my little nephews (12 and 9 y.o.) would enjoy this a lot. What do you think? I'm not sure about Mr Funny Bones Strikes Again, though. A couple of the jokes are just a bit too adult (e.g., The, "Is that a jade statue in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?" gag probably wouldn't go over well with the parents.)

So help, help Uncle dleedlee out. It not being too early for starting the old Christmas shopping list. What HK films would you suggest for the boys and a 14 y.o. niece (a very difficult age, let me tell you. A Nic Tse CD a couple years ago did not fly!)? I thought the Jackie Chan's Police Story box might be pretty good. (e.g., Action but not violent, Mommy doesn't approve of that. ) Actually, I'm not sure how they are with reading subs, so that's why when watching Mr Funny Bones it struck me as a very visual, sight-gag oriented film that might go over well.

Nominations are now open.

And sorry, for bringing up the subject of Xmas so early in the fall!

Let me try...

MERRY-GO-ROUND
SHAOLIN SOCCER
LOVE UNDERCOVER or DUMMY MOMMY, WITHOUT A BABY
The five episodes of ACES GO PLACES
A CHINESE GHOST STORY: THE TSUI HARK ANIMATION
BLACK MASK or DR. WAI IN THE SCRIPTURES WITH NO WORDS
MY SCHOOL MATE, THE BARBARIAN
HAPPY GHOST or his remake NINE GIRLS AND A GHOST
I LOVE MARIA
MY LIFE AS McDULL

I didn't like the following titles, but maybe they can be useful:

THE LEGEND OF ZU
MASTER Q 2001
THE MUMMY, AGED 19

"Black Mask" was a little violent... maybe better its first version, "Green Hornet"...

I like the Aces Go Places series suggestion. I actually bought MCDULL for my niece a few years ago but never gave it to her. It seemed a little too 'local' at the time. Not too sure about the others. I, personally, like Merry Go Round a lot, though. It's a nice little gem of a film. I lent Shaolin Soccer to my parents recently, they didn't say much about it. The CGS Animation has a bad taste in my mouth since I have the p/s version and can never figure out which is the widescreen version.

calros, do you mean the Bruce Lee one? There's two or three episodes w/Bruce out now aren't there? That's a good idea.

I was also thinking about the Twins Wonderland Series since my niece started to some babysitting this year.

Well... in fact... it was the Lam Ching Ying version... it's like "Black Mask", but "kiddier"...

The old TV series is too "camp" for the new generations... I think they would not understand it...

Hmm, I'll check that out. Mr.Vampire might be a good one, too, come to think of it. Thanks.

Thanks. That reminds me, I have a mainland vcd version I accidently picked up, wonder if I can pawn it off on her? Having the dub would be nice though. I'll have to look for those Fox editions and see if there's any kid-friendly films in the bunch. Look out WalMart!

You know, I'm not sure she's in the Grrl Power phase right now (I could be wrong). I suspect she's just discovering boys (she told her parents, don't even think about going to the homecoming game). I wonder, am I going to have to introduce her to the Dopiness that is named Sammi Cheng?
