So what do I need to know about Vivian Chow

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Wed Nov 10, 2004 12:40 am

I'm in the process of watching a rather insipid drama called TO LOVE FERRARI starring this pop singer and I'd like a little background on her. The HKMDB review (there's only one) says "Cheesy fun, especially when keeping Vivian's real career and (lack of) talent in mind." Is there something I should know? I've only seen her in PATH OF GLORY, UNMATCHABLE MATCH, FUN & FURY, ARREST THE RESTLESS and NO REGRET, NO RETURN and to be honest, as cute as she is, she's a non-entity to me. Was Vivian Chow a big thing when she was active in the industry? I found a website that lists her favourite group as The Carpenters, her favourite movie as The Sound of Music and her religion of choice as Christian. so I have this sneaking suspicion that her projected image in those days - as now - would make my teeth rot. There's a dream sequence at the beginning of TO LOVE FERRARI where she's giving a "concert" backed by some dancers and, to be honest, there wasn't much stage presence on display. I also discovered, thanks to this film, that I have some of her songs on compilation CDs, since they seem to be on the soundtrack to this film as well. One particularly fowl number is called "I Remember Your Love" (if i recall correctly) which ends with this creepy child's voice babbling along with Vivian. To be honest, this film is really starting to get on my nerves the more I think about it! Am I alone in this thinking, or is Vivian Chow simply a beautiful but moderately talented starlet??

I'm not a Vivan expert, so perhaps some others can help verify what I know. I heard she was DJ personality in her early days, then turned to acting and singing. I believe her first role was Heart to Hearts with George Lam and Carol Cheng. She was very young and charming, and she was also in the sequel. Check the database here for a whole list of her films. For a long time she was the sweet pop princess of Hong Kong, and was big there and Japan as well. Her songs are usually slow love songs, although there are poppy ones as well. She plays piano on some of them and sings a couple of songs in Japanese as well. Around 1995 she retired from the industry, but I'm not sure if she married or not, but we haven't heard from her since. I got a couple of her best of albums and a Music Video karaoke collection. I always thought she was pretty and had nice innocent songs--but not my favorite. Anyway that's what I know about her.

Thanks for your thoughts. You basically confirm my suspicions. She is quite attractive, and the songs I have that I know are hers - with the exception of that horrid "I Remember Your Love" mentioned in my first post - are generally quite palatable. In fact, a piano is a sort-of central element in TO LOVE FERRARI. I just get the impression that she's as whitebread as they come, which is not an entirely unappealing concept in the rather cynical world of the entertainment industry, it just makes her movie roles seem far, FAR too unbelievably clean. It seems as though she got out before things had a chance to go bad and while she still had a loyal fanbase. One website mentioned she's got a boyfriend, but I'm not sure how recent the info is. Seems like she's about 37 or so now, which I guess in Chinese culture makes her unsuited for marriage anymore (which is stupid, obviously), although judging from the magazine covers she still appears on, her looks have not faded over time. Nice life if you can get it, I guess.

Vivian's films

her best performances are actually supporting roles like Heart to Hearts, Heart into Hearts, Perfect Match, and Arrest the Restless. She came close to a "daring" role in Angel Hunter where she was a schoolgirl joining a religious cult, and had a funny guest spot in Tom, Dick and Hairy. To Love Ferrari is enjoyable although on a critical level it's no better than Glitter!

Glitter is precisely the movie that came to mind when I was watching it! Although if I had to pick a laughably cornball movie to show people for shits n' giggles, I think TO LOVE FERRARI would be the ideal choice.
