Roving Swordsman questions

The Celestial DVD case claims that ROVING SWORDSMAN was made in 1980, which surprised me as it felt more like the slightly tired efforts Chor Yuen was producing a few years later - popping over to HKMDB I noticed that it's listed as being from 1983. This makes much more sense to me - apart from anything else, it would explain why Ti Lung was looking a bit old in the film (that man really did age fast when it caught up on him - he looks 10 years older still in A BETTER TOMORROW).

Also, the on-screen credits listed the writer for the film as Huang Ching I think - which I thought might be Wong Jing. HKMDB has the writer as Chun Yue (3), aka Chin Yu. Anybody have more info?

HKMDB also mentions Wong Pau Gei as co-action director, but I only saw Tong Gaai in the credits (I didn't study the credits properly though).

"The Roving Swordsman" was first screened 1983/01/28.

the writer of this film is Chun Yue... which is a pseudonym of Chor Yuen


Your DVD has the chinese credits, too?

The plot thickens! Chun Yue (3) does seem to have writing credits on a lot of Chor Yuen films... in fact, yes they're all Chor Yuen films. Seems like a good merge candidate.

My DVD does have Chinese credits - I'll try to get some captures done and post them here.

Huang Ying (who is the original story author) is not Wong Jing, but Wong Ying...

The writer we had in our Db is correct. I'm sure Mr. Ciakmull very soon will arrive with proofs to merge Chor Yuen and Chun Yue

Wong Pau Gei was actually assistant action director. Fixed.

So who's Wong Ying?

Wong Ying (2) / Huang Ying , was a very popular writer specialized in knight errant and ghost novels. He also worked as TV screenwriter and finally adapted some of his own novels in films, beginning with "The Loot" and "The Sword" (both from 1980). He also directed a few movies in the mid-80s.

Main novels: "Evil Spirit Knife", "Silver Wolf", "Skeleton Murderer", "Skeleton Placard", "Stolen Goods", "Phoenix Plunders", "Wind and Thunder", "Lovesickness Madame", "Wind and Cloud 17 Swords", "The Dead Great Wild Goose", "Famous Sword", "Monster Soul", "Blood Bat", "Jade Dragonfly", "13 Murderers", "Portrait in Crystal" and so on. Some of them have been converted into movies, too. Another novels by Huang, directed by Chor Yuen: "The Black Lizard"(1981), "The Enchantress" (1983)...

I think he died in the first 90s, at a young age. One of his last jobs was the adaptation of Jing Yong's "The Swordsman" (1990).



Unfortunately we have very few info about him in our Db...
