DB Title Addition: THE RUNNER

Postby Brian Thibodeau » Mon Nov 07, 2005 3:36 pm

Picked up the VCD of this in Toronto a while back at a store that was selling all their VCD stock at half the sticker price - which is generally around $4.95. What a score! Hopefully, I can get back there soon! Found a few others that I don't think are in the database, but feature name casts. This is the only one I can think of off the top of my head. It stars Ken Wong, Angie Cheung and Waise Lee.

Thanks for that!

Now that I know Francis Nam (Lam Chi-wai) directed it, I'm moving it up a notch in my viewing pile just to find out if he blatantly ripped of another movie like he did in RANSOM EXPRESS (a direct lift of RUN LOLA RUN) and TWO FACES (an even MORE direct lift of FARGO). There's just something about the sleeve and the concept of THE RUNNER that rings a bell, so I guess I'll find out soon...

Well, I finally got around to watching this one, and I smell a remake. Only problem is, I can't figure out what it's a remake of!!

It's about an eclectic bunch of travellers stranded at a deserted Guangzhou movie studio/hotel (is that a real place? sure looks it) menaced by a wounded hood who seems only to exist to help them battle their own inner fears. Much like RANSOM EXPRESS and TWO FACES, it just doesn't feel like a Hong Kong picture. My guess is the original might be a Japanese flick, but regardless, i hope I stumble across it some day because this will eat at me...

Anyways, i couldn't take screen shots of the closing credits due to my VLC player getting hung up on the trailer included on the second disc, so I took some headshots of the primary cast for folks to help identify. Many of these folks don't have headshots in the DB yet, either.

To help out, since I couldn't get the credits, I wrote down the cast names NOT already included in the DB, which are included in English at the end, to aid ID purposes on the pictures above and perhaps be added to the listing itself:

Chung Chun (Jane??)
Dong Chun-fai
Chong Man
Chu Hoi-fei
Wong Wai Lai

Producer and writer is Tony Leung Heung-wah, another reason I strongly suspect it's a remake, as he was also involved in RANSOM EXPRESS and TWO FACES.
