Wisely on film

Postby Mike Thomason » Tue Dec 27, 2005 4:41 pm

Just checking to see that I've got all the Wisely films on disc? From memory it goes something like....

The Seventh Curse (1986)
Armour Of God (1987)*
Legend Of Wisely (1987)
Bury Me High (1990)
The Cat (1992)
The Wesley's Mysterious File (2002)

...I forget if there were more! 'tis funny how a new actor playing James Bond once every decade shakes up such a stir, but back in HK Wisely's been played by a different actor with every film! So far we've had Chow Yun Fat, Jackie Chan, Sam Hui, Chin Kar Lok, Waise Lee (coincidence or what?) and Andy Lau. I wonder who's next? The world needs another Wisely film, and I'm sure Ngai Hong has supplied more than enough source material with the hundred plus novels he's written! :D

* before anyone shoots me down in flames -- AOG was commenced as a Wisely film, believe it or not!

Not that these count, but...

Ngai Hong played the character in the jokey TALE FROM THE EAST, though it wasn't a Wisely film proper. His character qualifies his knowledge of time travel by showing the heroes his laserdiscs of BACK TO THE FUTURE and TIME AFTER TIME.

Not sure if it's a Wisely film, either, but DR. WAI IN THE SCRIPTURE WITH NO WORDS certainly plays like one. It's also known on occasion by the alternate title DR. YUEN & WISELY, although that may have a cash-in on the character's name...

I'd agree the world needs another Wisely movie. The concept is better suited to today's filmmaking technologies than those of the 80's and early 90's, when most of those films were made. WESLEY'S could have been something really cool, but it seemed doomed from the start by a bad script (not to mention the various other problems that held up its release). In fact, of all the films made, I'd say BURY ME HIGH and LEGEND OF WISELY are the only ones that really do the character justice.

I don't believe it is. More of a liberal plundering of E.T., Raiders of the Lost Ark and Alien, really. Such a story would probably work as a Wisely film, though...
