Oh dear, oh dear. It appears the mainland edit has struck the members of this esteemed forum. PLEASE try to see the HK version in some form or another. The biggest complaint I've heard - online and in the real world - from people who've seen the Mainland cut, is that they were rather underwhelmed by the film as a whole, even if they thought the fights were fantastic, which I always felt was truly unfair since that mainland edit is NOT the film Wilson Yip directed.
In fact, it's the ENDING (or ENDINGS!) of the proper version that really makes the film one of the best Hong Kong movies I've ever seen. nice and dark and bleak, as any good noir film should be. I won't post spoilers here, though I'm sure you could find PLENTY online, but really, do yourselves a favour and watch the HK release, and preferably from beginning to end, because if the version you saw indeed ends with a cut from Donnie putting down a glass to Simon and the little girl on the beach, then not only are you missing an AMAZING couple of minutes in between those scenes, but ALSO many of the fights and knife-murders have been judiciously trimmed (amazing that they still hold up as well as they do!).
Oh and Bob, hopefully once you see the proper version, maybe you'll be pleased enough to restore the docked point!
