After seeing Jonathan Rosses programme on HK films
im ashamed to say i have missed out seeing Johnnie To films
Which ones are worth watching ?

I didn't care so much for:

A Hero Never Dies
Wu Yen
Fat Choi Spirit
Throw Down

I'd second that list. I did like A hero never dies alot though. I would also add Running out of Time 2, which is no where near as good as the first, but is a good way to spend 90 minutes. Also it's probably Ekin Cheng's best preformance I've ever seen. I've also heard Running on Karma is quite good, but I have yet to see it.

i am in the minority but I kinda dug Lifeline. They movie is by the book and the characters are very cliched, but i really dug the fire fighting scenes.

And one should never rule out some of To's better producing gigs, such as LONGEST NITE and EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. Both of these rank right up there with To's darker crime thrillers.

Actually, rumour has it that To took over directing duties on both those films because he wasn't happy with Patrick Yau's work...

That's why whenever someone asks me about good Johnnie To movies, I always include them. They just feel right! (and certainly at odds with Yau's other films, THE ODD ONE DIES and especially LOSER'S CLUB.

I just saw Running on Karma, and I was very impressed. It's definetly one of my favorite To films. Right up there with Fulltime Killers and The Mission.

By far the best 2 Johnnie To movie is the MISSION. It's best to try to watch this soon before the sequel comes out.the other is NEEDING YOU.... the best hk romantic movie ever!!

Steve, tell me more about the Jonathan Ross show, does he review different types of movie? I still remember him interviewing Jackie Chan many many years ago, is it titled something like the incrediablly strange film show?

No this Jonathan Ross thing is brand new It was about the new wave of HK films , He did an interview with Stephen Chow, Wong kar Wai and Derek Yee Spoke about Infernal Affairs , Kung Fu Hustle and Infernal Affairs Johnnie To films especially Breaking news, and another film i cant think off which stars andy lau . he spoke to derek yee about one night in mongkok .
He also did features on Korea and Japan

Ross can do anything on Brit tv,bless his heart,I don't know why a lot of people
don't like him,he must have some bad rap over at BBC. I even bought his Strange Film book
which is pretty good.

As for To, yes he did say in an interview that they wanted to give Yau credit to get the
kid on track,but To directed the film (Yau wasn't fired or at least he didn't say that).

Too bad Yau didn't stay on track for long. LOSER'S CLUB appears to have put paid to his career post haste.
