from michelleyeoh.info, some news on the prequel/pentalogy...

(03/10/06) According to "The Hollywood Reporter", the Weinstein brothers have acquired the worldwide rights to the "Crane - Iron Pentalogy," and plan to bring the series to the stage and screen. The possible film versions may include prequels and sequels to Crouching Tiger, which will not itself be remade for the screen. The brothers hope to persuade Ang Lee to return as the director of the Chinese-language franchise.

:?
Being a huge fan of CTHD, I hope it happens, but having the Weinsteins involved scares me. Maybe Ang Lee has garnered enough praise and respect to avoid major input from them?

BEIJING, March 30 -- According to a Chinese newspaper, someone has worked with Ang Lee "Eat Drink Man Woman" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", said Lee's next film would probably tell the story of "The Seven Sages of Bamboo Grove" during China's Three Kingdom Period (AD 220 - 265) and the Jin Dynasty (AD 265 - 420).

The Seven Sages were scholars and poets who regularly gathered in a bamboo grove to escape the troubles of the outside world and to lose themselves in pure thoughts and conversations.

The Seven Sages project, if true, is only one of multiple projects Ang Lee is developing now and the project is still in a very early stage.
