I probably shouldn't have, but I picked up Dragon Dynasty's ROYAL TRAMP COLLECTION (new) for $4.99CDN at a bargain department store on the way home tonight. Heard rough things about the quality of the set, but from Dragon Dynasty I'd expect no less than a mixed bag. I've seen these before, so this will be an affordable revisit at the very least!

I went through several Rarescope releases this month, so I'm a bit skewed on quality . Finished Amazons and Supermen which is one of the strangest coproductions (well mostly Shaw Brother's lending two of their actors).

The quality on the Royal Tramp set is neither bad nor great. Fun set (though nowhere near my favorite Chow acted films), liked the interview (there could have been more extras though) have yet to go to the commentaries though. I'm not sure how it compares to the Fortune Star release though. The good news for you though is that the DD release is OOP.

Another trip home to the family, another trip across the border to Big Lots. VERY nice score this time - they recently put out a huge batch of bundled Genius Products, Wellspring and Winstar DVDs of import, arthouse, documentaries etc, each with three discs for $3.00! Unfortunately, this means you sometimes have to take a title (or two) that you don't want to get a couple of titles (or one) that you do, but for a buck a movie, you can't lose. Here's the 3-packs I found (there were others). Bold titles are those that have been on my mental wanna-see lists for ages (plus some Korean films I've already seen), the rest are headed to Amazon marketplace (unless some kind folks here have good words for them):

Sometimes finding used movies can be a blessing. Especially at FYE where I get to double coupons. Tuesday I'll post all the stuff I got for my birthday (FYE gives a 10 percent bonus on that day).

As usual you got a pretty good bunch of stuff Brian. I've been wanting to watch The Wild Child for quite a while. I've seen 9 Truffaut films which means I have a bit more to go (seen all but The Last Metro on Criterion). I own but have not watched yet The Bride Wore Black which seems that Tarantino took a bit from (like he did with Shoot The Piano Player for Pulp Fiction).

It seems that as DVD wheezes through its final years, Big Lots is fast becoming the ONLY place to pick up a lot of odds 'n ends you might have missed or were simply been curious to see over the years. I went over this weekend with no expectations. I'd read about the $3 three-packs on another forum, but the titles they were posting didn't immediately jump out at me. Once I saw the packs in-store, and realized these were quality releases of art-house and import movies from legitimate distributors, many of which I'd heard about from online reviews or during their screenings at the TIFF, I had to bite at that price, and I'd urge our American pallies here to at least check out their nearest Big Lots for more of the same (mullets and wife-beaters optional, of course) - sometimes it seems like Shawn and I are the only ones who have access to a store.

Just read elsewhere that some stores have a three -pack containing the Dragon Dynasty edition of HARD BOILED. For a dollar! Now that's a fair price to pay to listen to Bey Logan (sorry, couldn't resist). The Michigan store I visited on the weekend had several sets that included DD's edition of Johnnie To's PTU. They also had a boatload of bundled three-packs featuring various ESPN sports DVDs (compilations, documentaries, mini-series, etc.).

In retrospect (and as always), I'm thinking I should've bought doubles and triples of several of these three-packs for resale on Amazon.ca (it's virtually impossible to find this stuff in Canadian stores anymore), as funding for future goodies from Hong Kong. I might be in Buffalo this weekend, so maybe I'll stock up there.

Fox has several of these four-film sets available and/or releasing in the months ahead. These are 4-disc sets collecting previous Studio Classics editions (extras and all) into one single DVD case. There have been 15 sets released/announced so far, some better than others depending on taste, but most under unspoken thematic umbrellas (this one appears to be melodramas). Found several at Target (in the U.S.) for $9.99 each, which is the cheapest I've seen them anywhere. Hope to add a few more in the future. Very nice companion sets to the TCM Greatest Classic Movies and Warner 4 Film Favorites collections.

Found a place in Michigan called Family Video (a chain, I presume?) that was selling off a lot of used stuff for $2.95 a pop, so found these:

An interesting (well, to me, anyways!) note about MODELS ANGEL. My DVD version does not say TWILIGHT ZONE COPS anywhere on the package. The sleeve pictured in the DB definitely puts it as part of the series, but my sleeve makes it look more like a fluffy romantic comedy/drama which, judging from the quick skip-through I gave it last night, is exactly what it is. I have to wonder if it was just some cheap programmer they decided to lump in with the TZC series to boost what little sales they probably got! Here's the sleeve on mine.

We decided on a trip to Buffalo today to do some shopping, so naturally, I couldn't resist dropping into a couple of big lots for some more $3 three-packs. Both stores were fairly picked over, but I scooped up a load of doubles and triples—and stuff I'll never watch—for the express purpose of relisting them on Amazon.ca, where they fetch anywhere from five to twenty times what I paid. I know all about the late nights, early mornings and lack of sleep, not just from Hong Kong movies, but from all the other movies I've been listing in this thread. I really do hope to pare things back in the future (to focus more on HK stuff), but falling prices and closeout stores are doing their best to hobble me. There's never been a better (or more affordable) time to broaden one's cinematic horizons. Pity (but predictable, I suppose) that it comes in the waning days of disc-based formats. Still, there are warehouses full of unsold DVDs out there even as we speak that will inevitably turn up cheap.

Thankfully, this weekend's purchases—all from a Father's Day Blu/DVD sale at our major electronics chain that was actually decent for a change—were all films I'd previously seen (three on the big screen; one a DVD upgrade), so they won't need to be watched for ages:

Yes this edition does have English subtitles,it is a Cine Asia (UK) release, http://www.cine-asia.co.uk/Raging-Phoenix-DVD/125/ so it is region 2. They have some other good titles, like Chocolate, another great Thai film, starring "Jeeja" Yanin Vismistananda. You are spot on about some Thai editions not having English subtitles (for whatever reason), even when the DVD cover art has the English language used for the title, the story summary, disc details etc!

It reminds me of lots of old Thai films available in Thailand (mostly on VCD) that are either without subtitles or subtitled in Thai only. So frustrating for non Thai speakers like myself, being able to read the film summary but being all at sea with the actual dialogue (yeah I did buy them anyway ) in the film. One shopkeeper suggested that it would be quicker for me to learn Thai (no matter how bad a student) than wait for subtitled versions to be released. Maybe I should have followed his advice.

So true. I run hot-and-cold on Thai cinema in general. Find the stuff too derivative (of itself) and/or repetitive. Generally, I'm content to grab HK releases of Thai films as these tend to be the country's highest-profile (and generally most polished) productions, although the abundance of horror films picked up by HK distributors gets tiresome after awhile. I see what I can, but it's been ages since I've ordered from Thailand because of the subtitle issue.

In cases where the original was a two-disc set, the second disc has been dropped, but those were few and far between in the Fox Cinema Classics series. PEYTON PLACE is a two-sided disc, movie on one side, bonus materials on the other and, as you noted in your list, the LES MISERABLE disc contains two versions of the film. I'm sure other sets will have discs like this. For $8.99, these are must-haves for anyone wanting to brush up on studio and filmmaking history (commentaries galore!). So far, 15 of these 4-packs have been released or announced, and I'm really hoping Target will stock more of them at these prices. I've heard they're also selling the TCM GREATEST CLASSIC MOVIES collections for $9.99, but I haven't bothered to look for those as I have most of them already.

I'm sure other sets will have discs like this. For $8.99, these are must-haves for anyone wanting to brush up on studio and filmmaking history (commentaries galore!). So far, 15 of these 4-packs have been released or announced, and I'm really hoping Target will stock more of them at these prices. I've heard they're also selling the TCM GREATEST CLASSIC MOVIES collections for $9.99, but I haven't bothered to look for those as I have most of them already.

Thanks for the news Brian. I'll pick up more if Target gets more. There is a lot of material to watch (and listen to) then on top of the other films I need to watch etc... I think we should get a reward anytime we finish a long running series (I ended up watching Aces Go Places #5; no I haven't seen the 97 version ).

A couple of the Educational shorts are in the Kino box set of Keaton. They are not quite as good as the Columbia shorts (I have the box set of that) and nowhere near his shorts of the 1920s. What Keaton DVDs do you have Cal?

I have The Buster Keaton Chronicles, which was certainly a good place to start. I still haven't watched a couple of the features, but I've watched all of the shorts.
