After working in Hong Kong and Hollywood, he returned to Korea where he was still involved in television series and films. Eventually retired in 1996 after making the Korean film BOSS. He returned to the entertainment industry in 2009 playing Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto on the Korean TV series RETURN OF ILJIMAE.

Hwang is also the subject of an upcoming documentary entitled THE ANONYMOUS KING, where the documentary filmmaker goes to Hong Kong and Seoul to find Hwang and eventually does find Hwang, who is gracious to reveal everything from his training in TKD to his military career to his film career. The documentary also features Hwang's son Jason and former protege turned actor and teacher Roy Horan.
