The Unicorn Palm (1972)

Postby chen lung » Sun Mar 01, 2009 6:50 pm

Wonderful movie this is  . I got back to the subtitling of this when I received the Soulblade disc (risk of a reissue for a s**t film that's still poor!) for higher-resolution credits and subtitles. The onscreen title is 'The Unicorn Palm', posters say 'Fist Of Unicorn', whilst the export credits say 'Bruce Lee And I'.

Somebody...Unicorns are us

Postby kenichiku » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:53 am

testing, testing....not to butt in here because of the accompanying text that introduces some of these original credits (which I find hilariously promotional in tone) I had to pitch in to share my laugh from a break from fixing/mopping up those putridly fan-misguided IMDB entries & after figuring out my new password to see what I've been missing all these months. Kudos, great new look y'all.

Here since you guys are Canto based, I'll oblige for the first few frames :

1st frame

'bun pien duk bit gam tse' something to the effect of: "Special thanks for full cooperation in this film: '

'Lee Siu Lung, Yee mo mo sut gu mun' or 'Bruce Lee',

title: 'moral/righteous duty' ('gratis' i.e. unpaid) Martial arts adviser/consultant'

2nd frame:

'ling5 ham4 ju yan' title: lead actor (the only famous 'red' name at the time)- 'Kam Fai' (Tina Chin-fei)

3rd frame:

'title: Duk bit6 tui1 zin, sun niu kuen wang' or 'introducing with elegant regard, new female boxing champion' - 'Mang Sau' (Meng Chiu)

4th frame:

'tin choi tung sing' or title: 'Heaven endowed (as in talent, i.e. 'innately gifted') child actors' - 'Mang Hoi' (Meng Hai), 'Au-yeung Tak Dung' (Ouyang Te-tung)

5th frame: (fun's over - reverting to Mando for the rest of this Mando-era HK title)

title: guest cast - Wei Ping Ao, Chao Lei, Chen Ching, Li Ying & Tai Te-ching ('Dai Tak Hing'? , unsure of this one).

6th frame:

'Japan's chief ('unparalleled' ie 'ichiban') popular star' - 'Chong Tin Bo Ziu' aka 'Kurata Yusuaki'
Australia's official karate champion' - 'Au lik san dai' ('dai' = 'big i.e. grand', I get it!)...'Alexander Grand'

title:
'Dak bit zor yin' or 'special assistant' (advisor or fighting dtr referring to martial arts w/o specifically stating)

7th frame:

'Korea's Hapkido established all-round'
Ji Han-jae, Whang Il Shik

title:
'Dak bit zor yin' or 'special assistant' (advisor or fighting dtr referring to martial arts w/o specifically stating)

8th frame:

title: Supporting cast - Chin Di, Ku Wen Tsung, Huo Hsing (aka 'Fo Sing' or 'fire (flaming) star', better known to Gen-X on as 'Mars'), Kuan Chih-liang, Lai Wen, Erh Feng, Hsu Hung, Tang Ti

(curiously I don't see Little Unicorn Chan from your frames unless he had another AKA)

9th frame:

D.P. - Wei Hai Feng
'cut n paste' i.e. editor - 'Kuo Ting Hung'
A.D. - Erh Feng
set decorator - Chuang Sheng (aka Johnson Tsao)
music aka composer or arranger - Wang Ju-ren (Eddie Wang)

10th frame:

illumination or lighting tech - Lin Chiu
make-up - Wen Mei-lien, Lai je (aka 'sister Lai')
props - Chen Chien-kang, Tu Wen

Never bothered with watching this one for decades but I'm curious now (for some laughs).

Yes. And I do remember a frame crediting Little Unicorn on the poor-quality video I saw.

Thank you gentlemen! Ages ago, I was fretting about how I'd get these transcribed, but HKMDB has once again come through.

Just one thing about the credits for the Korean actors - there appears to be a job next to each name (as opposed to the one)?

And yeah, Unicorn, the director and producer are credited - I just didn't include them as they were already in the database :).

This forthcoming German edition will be uncut for the first time (on DVD at least) - English/Mandarin soundtracks with overhauled English subtitles and 2:35:1 progressive anamorphic video newly from 35mm (for most of it with a couple of 2:35:1 VHS inserts), so forget any other "attempt" . I'm still going to need help with the subtitles as there's either missing sections or suspicious/poor/dumbed down translation.

<Lian Jiao - what is the 2nd char ?>

I've seen 'Jiao' published in credits but I know 'Lin Jiu/Lin Chiu' (Mando) is more accurate but you guys can take it form here: ??.

Great, an old-school version worth buying. Deutschland hier komme ich.

Hi Kenichiku

Could you say what the capture about the Korean actors (Ji Han Jae+Hwang In Sik) says in full? There's text next to each actor and I wondered if it was different :).

Ta!

I'll do one better. I'll look a little closer & re-clarify the entire above post.

Chinese words in general are so multifaceted & culturally laced that many have no direct translation in western terms therefore regarding the flowery title adjectives, if you're actually planning to use all of this with your effort as a piece of retail software merchandise, you might proceed with caution.

You wouldn't want to complicate your message by using my interpretations verbatim & triggering unwanted responses with your software audience i.e. confusion, irony, unintended humor, etc. (especially at the beginning of a film!) so as a disclaimer, you may wish to keep it simple while 'crossing-over' content & fulfilling your ambassadorship to bridge the cultural divide. As you witnessed, some of the credit adjectives if directly (& mechanically) translated will play out differently & sometimes adversely to occidental ears (including my own) at the expense of the original cultural intent. A good subtitler recognizes his/her interpretive license, applies an appropriate, neutral & responsible dose of the editorial while still remaining true to the intended message.

My subtitling philosophy is to be as accurate to the point it doesn't look unnatural and turn into a flubtitle :). I feel I've gotten better at doing them since and improve with every film I do. If the characters say what you say, then I'll gladly add it as that :).

http://hkmdb.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=50003 - I've started this topic, but the section is practically dead considering it should be the biggest attraction  !

Like I said, you have latitude as the author to convey what's needed so I'll advise as I would a doctor's diagnosis...seek a 2nd opinion to be certain.
