Please name a Heroic Bloodshed reccomendation for late 80's

Postby Kevin The Killer » Sun Jul 24, 2005 12:11 pm

I ask someone to please reccomend a heroic bloodshed movie for the late 80's, one with a lot of action and good acting, (have seen all of Woo's work, seen: The Big Heat, Legacy Of Rage, Rich And Famous, Tragic Hero, Flaming Brothers, Return To A Better Tomorrow, Return Engagement and Gunmen, any reccomendations, that is like any of Woo's stuff. I want something action-packed gunplay and great acting. Late 80's film. Thank You Very Much for your time and help!

City on Fire and all Ringo Lam movies are pretty good..., the Young and Dangerous series and Tiger Cage are fun although they are later than the 80s... also check out Tragic Fantasy: The Tiger of Waichai.

Frankie Chan's BURNING AMBITION, in which he also stars, is one of the most underrated Hong Kong ass-kickers of all time. Plenty of kung-fu and gunfights and car chases with some nice triad intrigue. Well worth seeking out.

I'd also recommend RETURN ENGAGEMENT, which is sort of Extreme Heroic Bloodshed, particularly during it's improbably monstrous final gun battle between Alan Tang, Andy Lau and literal truckloads of gangsters.

Also in the RINGO LAM canon: FULL CONTACT is an absolute must.

Full Contact has plenty of gunplay. I'm not sure anyone really matches up to Woo's full-on barrage though, if that's the standard you're going by.

You might want to check out the late-80's early-90's filmography of Sibelle Hu. She did tonnes of pictures LOADED with GUNPLAY, often co-starring the likes of Yukari Oshima, Moon Lee, Alex Man, Alex Fong, and many others. Middle-budget stuff (compared to, say, John Woo movies), but generally loaded with gun action.

Try DEVIL HUNTERS, FIRE PHOENIX, DRAGON FIGHTER, FATAL MISSION, MIGHTY GAMBLER (a personal favourite with LOTS of large scale shootouts), CHINA HEAT (tough to find subbed) and ANGEL TERMINATORS 2 (part 1 is loaded with gun battles too!).

From the Moon Lee canon, I'd suggest FATAL TERMINATION for sure, as well as MISSION OF CONDOR, MISSION OF JUSTICE and A SERIOUS SHOCK.

While these films DO feature martial arts, the vast majority of them are decidedly top heavy with gunfights, so you should find something to enjoy in them. Not sure which ones are on DVD, but I have all of them on VCD, so I know they're at least available in that format.

If your intention is to restrict yourself (for the time being, hopefully) ONLY to movies that fit the "heroic bloodshed gunplay" mold, then you've probably already seen everything there is to see. The only film I might recommend that doesn't always crop up in Heroic Bloodshed discussions is HERO OF TOMORROW starring Max Mok and Miu Kiu-wai. Very stylish in a John Woo vein.

Thanks for the info, I'll check those movies out, I mean anything with LOADS of gunplay, doesn't have to be Heroic Bloodshed, but I would prefer it was.

Have you seen 'Long Arm of the Law'? It is from the early 80's and it is a great heroic bloodshed film.

hey,

I have seen Goodbye My Friend and it's evidently an older movie released in 1988 to capatalize on Chow's popularity. He did his own dubbing though for the 1988 release print seemingly. My review:

Ahhhh cheers, not what I was expecting then (Goodbye, My Friend). Cheers anyway, is there any recommendations that So Good Reviews can give to me from the genre? (Gunplay)
