-----------------

Getting back to the "Scrounge" as it were, I finally watched the Category III thriller FATAL PASSION a couple days back. What an awesome movie! It's a total rip on FATAL ATTRACTION, but imagine if Glenn Close's character had a crazed, jealous assassin for a boyfriend! That's Alex Man in this flick. Nancy Chang plays the Close character, but since this is a Hong Kong flick and the damaged relationship between the hero (Eddie Cheung) and his mousy, far-too-forgiving wife (Cher Yeung) therefore can't be left with a question mark hanging over it the way it was in the American film, Nancy Chang gets iced about two-thirds in so Alex can go nuts with a cunning abandon. This has to be one of the few movies where a character who's completely on fire is able to get in a car and drive it at another character! Take that, Johnny Blaze!

And what's the deal with Nancy Chang. According to the DB she's only been in two movies, but man is she smokin' in this, and fond enough of her assets to reveal all of them on a regular basis AND go womano-a-womano with Cher in a cute little room trasher. In her honour, I updated the film's DB entry with a few shots of Ms. Chang that actually leave something to the imagination!

One of my favorite jidai-geki films as well as one of my favorite films is Yojimbo from Akira Kurosawa. The western inspired film that would inspire future westerns especially the remake by Sergio Leone Fistful of Dollars (which is nowhere as good as Yojimbo though the second and third films of the Man with no Name series are excellent) and would inspire Last Man Standing (I’m not sure that matters that much  and I think most terse reviews point this out as well as that it was based on Dashiell Hammett's novel "Red Harvest" ). Best essay on this film is from Donald Ritchie in The Films of Kurosawa -- http://www.amazon.com/Films-Akira-Kuros ... 0520220374 The cinematography by Kazuo Miyagawa (who also did Ugetsu and Rashomon) is some of the best, I feel, ever done. I tend to enjoy any film that has both Mifune and Nakadai (include Sword of Doom, Samurai Rebellion, High and Low, and Sanjuro).

The reason why I rewatched this was that I got the re-release of Criterion (the box set with Sanjuro). It has a fabulous new transfer, Stephen Prince commentary and extras.

Has anybody seen Spirited Killer (the one that barely has Tony Jaa; but he is prominent on the cover)?

Edit: here is the link on this forum to Spirited Killer (thanks Mr. Booth): http://hkmdb.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t= ... ted+killer

Am in transit in Singapore Airport at the present moment, on my way home and with the wife alongside me...:)

...so expect a MASSIVE update post over the weekend detailing what I bought while I was away. It's another one of those posts that Brian says only I can do and with such a wealth of product.

Think it's about 40 or 50 titles...let you all know sometime after I get back to Oz (which'll be the wee small hours of tomorrow morning).

Don't forget to read back through the thread. I've been doing my best to give you a run for your money this time around. Moving to the big city has put so much more at my fingertips for a LOT less money, and a new job with only 40 hours a week (as opposed to 60 on the old one) has freed up a lot of time to watch them as well...

Speaking of new finds, I couldn't resist revisiting the same movie & music wholesale place I mentioned in a very recent post, where the VCDs were all $2.50. I deliberately skipped an aisle last time because the place was closing, but took care of that tonight.

As always, hints as to whether I've actually got anything worth watching are always appreciated!

LUCKY DIAMOND (1985, Ocean Shores) Anita Mui, Alex Man, directed by Yuen Cheung-yan. Looks like a comedy with some martial arts action, if the sleeve's anything to go on.

LOVE AND JUSTICE (19??, Universe) Not in the database, and not much I can tell from the sleeve, but looked interesting. Looks like it might be a noir-ish romantic cop thriller.

BODYGUARD FOR THE DEAD (1999, B&S) Realized from looking this up in the database, that it's from the director of THERE'S A GHOST IN THE BOY'S ROOM, an interminable turd of a movie. What have I done! Ryan's review in the DB offers some hope, though. In fact, Ryan's reviews of a lot of this DV product from 99 and 00 have been most helpful!

ONCE UPON A TIME IN TRIAD SOCIETY 2 (1996, Fitto) I've been looking for this for years and didn't even know I'd found it tonight until I popped it in to see what the title was: there's no English on the package, unfortunately.

FIRE PHOENIX (1990, Universe) FINALLY filled one of about two holes in my "Complete Works of Wong Chan-yeung" collection, this Sibelle Hu actioner will hopefully fit nicely with Devil Hunters, Dragon Fighter, Mission of Justice, Angel Terminators 2, Mighty Gambler (one of his best!), etc.

FIREFOX'S KILLER (1990, Universe). Don't know much about this one, outside of Leung Kar-yan and Austin Wai. Cover looked damned cool, though...

ONE ARM HERO (1994, Universe) Another one I've been looking for for ages. The final chapter of the Sam The Iron Bridge trilogy. Not overly well reviewed here, but I'm a completist if nothing else.

WONDERFUL KILL (1993, Universe) Shing Fui-on, Lin Wai, Karel Wong. Judging from the photos on the sleeve, and the participation of the same director, this has the potential to be as bad as VENGEANCE OF SIX DRAGONS, which I also picked up in recent weeks (and reviewed here). Oh well, even junk like this has its moments!

Had to scrounge deep for these next few Category III goodies. These tended to be the last copies the store had, while they had multiples of just about everything else!

THE LAST DUEL (1989) Alex Man, Rosamund Kwan. This one's weird. The sleeve seems to indicate that it's both Cat. III and Cat. II. You can see it labelled as such on the VCD sleeve uploaded by Young Master.
http://hkmdb.com/db/movies/image_detail.mhtml?id=7140&image_id=26287&display_set=eng
Anybody familiar with something like this? Are both versions included on this disc or something?
EDIT: I just opened this and the disc labels indicate the Mandarin version is Cat. III and the Cantonese Cat. II, so I'll assume this has something to do with language. Never seen that before.

PASSIONATE KILLING IN THE DREAM (1992, Mei Ah) Gordon Liu, Michiko Nishiwaki. Looks interesting...

TAKING MANHATTAN (1992, Mei Ah) Carrie Ng. Directed by Kirk Wong.

INFORMER (1995, Star) Another presentation from Danny Lee's Magnum Video Productions. I never seem to be let down by these... :D

BUDDHIST (20??) Can't tell much about this one. It's a Cat. III horror flick directed by and starring Hugo Ng. The english title has the letter 'U' upside down and the two 'D's backwards, so it should be interesting to get it into the DB.

UNIDENTIFIED ROBERT MAK VIDEOGRAMME (19??) have no idea what this is beyond some kind of supernatural chiller, but I'll eventually post screen grabs to at least get it into the DB, as it's not there now. No english subs, no english title whatsoever.

Picked up some J-DVDs while I was out as well, all the budget-conscious Hong Kong versions:

GUN CRAZY: THE MAGNIFICENT FIVE STRIKE (2006) Girls with guns. Wondering if this is based on, or part of, an earlier Japanese video series???
GAMERA THE BRAVE
THE SUBMERSION OF JAPAN (2006)
THE WORLD SINKS EXCEPT JAPAN (2006) had to have balance, you know)

and a small set of HK titles
HEAVENLY MISSION
DIARY
LETHAL NINJA
WIFE FROM HELL

Hopefully this will keep me busy for awhile!

Maybe because Wong Chi-Yeung says "fuckin motherfucker"

He is extremely evil in this movie btw, and it's pretty good :) (IMO)

Sounds good to me! 8)

Wong Chi-yeung's one of those guys who just seems born to play bad guys, despite being in the (very) occasional comedy or drama in a good guy role. Nowadays, when I see him in the cast list of some of the direct-to-video stuff he's been making, I usually assume he'll end up being the villain (and usually end up being right!)

Okay, you're caning me...and it wasn't quite 40 or 50 titles like I thought, but less...and here they are:

Mountain Patrol (China) (DVD)
Once Upon A Time In High School (South Korea) (DVD)
Platonic Sex (Japan) (DVD)

When Fortune Smiles (Hong Kong) (DVD) (16:9 reissue)

I also bought the Malaysian DVDs of The Blade and Fist Of Legend, which I instantly jumped at because they both claimed to be in original language and with English subs -- they both actually were, but they were rubbish quality ports of the French HK Video versions, albeit incorrectly flagged 16:9 transfers (producing a stretched 4:3 image); suffice to say, both have been binned accordingly. Should have known better, as the majority of Malaysian DVDs are shoddy quality at best... :(

Don'f forget, though. I'm buying tonnes of VCDs. That's SO eight years ago...

By the way, I'm wondering about that BEST OF THE BEST reissue you picked up. Is that the Jacky Cheung one or the Julian Cheung one? I've been looking for the latter around here for quite some time now with no luck.

Looks like we may have no choice but to pay the Weinsteins for the privilege of seeing these films in a proper presentation. Sigh. Can't wait to see who they get to provide commentaries.

My wife's Christian name is Esther -- her Chinese name is Mei Li. Does that put paid to any ill-will? I've just never been overly keen on bringing her into the 'net world 'cause it gives the haters something extra to slag me off with (and a more "personal" nerve to prod) and she has zero interest in all of this stuff I do here on the 'net. She finds it all a tremendous waste of time and energy and would far prefer I was doing something constructive with my time...like working on reviews for my own site. She isn't really interested too much in all of this discussion forum stuff... :P

It's the Herman Yau/Jacky Cheung film (which I've never seen) and was released by relatively new player in Malaysia AOE Worldwide. There was a whole stack of previously released by Megastar HK titles that they've put out in Malaysia, and I really wish I had've picked more of them up now. But being that they all carry the Media Asia logo at the head of the film, and are new 16:9 anamorphic transfers, I'm guessing they'll all sooner or later be released on the Megastar Collection line in HK. So, expect titles like City Kids and Return of the Lucky Stars to see a re-release in new anamorphic transfers some time this year at your favourite HK retailers! :)

Cheers & gotta scoot!

Beautiful name for a no doubt beautiful girl. There was never any ill-will. Truthfully, "my wife" would've been enough, as it just sounds nicer to me than "the wife." Heavens, I'm almost starting to sound conservative!

Thanks for the update on BEST OF THE BEST. That's the one I already have, but I've kept it all these years because I thought it was quite a good movie. Hope the disc is a quality piece.

Thank you, Master -- that is exactly the point I was trying to make!

And cal42: don't worry, I wasn't trying to make you paranoid -- I watch near every Asian movie I see on DVD too; but I watch for the movies themselves and as such really only enjoy discussing the merits of them. When, as Master noted above, people can't discuss film without resorting to the above, then I have to fully agree: they are missing the point of cinema in general...and, in many cases, are investing far too much negative energy into looking for faults and flaws over actually enjoying the film itself.

If I worried about spelling and/or grammar in subtitles, poor video transfers etc etc ad nauseum, then I would have given up watching Asian cinema over a decade ago -- it's not an entertainment medium intended solely for foreign markets; it's intended for domestic markets in the production countries and often the appeal manages to travel abroad. So to whinge and whine that Asian filmmakers aren't solely catering to international audiences, be it the types of film they produce or the quality of their home video presentations, is more than a little insular...as well as egocentric and selfish. Well...that's just what I feel anyway, as I'm a film fan first and foremost...

Good point. I've been trying on occasion in this thread to post brief comments about certain movies that get me jazzed, but unfortunately, as I'm bottom-feeding these days with these VCD bargains, my discussions tend to be with myself!

Guess I gotta start watching all the new releases I've picked up one of these days!

Lara Croft, Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life (USA/UK) (DVD)
P (Thailand) (DVD)
Tom Yum Goong (Thailand) (DVD) (R3 2-disc SE)*

* as I've recently discovered that the local release (R4) will be through whatever domestic distributor handles Weinstein pickups, Disney/Buena Vista no doubt, I've decided to give my money to Sth Korea in this instance.

Damn you Bearserk! Damn you all to hell!!!

Here I think I'm making good progress in acquiring movies that no one else bothers with, and you go and post a list like that! I think I've got all of about eleven titles on that whole list (seen a few others). Now I have to find all the rest! :P

If I lived in Norway, I'd probably have to rob you.

Nonetheless, that's a fantastic cross-section of movies, not to mention a few that aren't in the database just yet (and yes, I'm well aware some of them are probably mainland Chinese or Taiwanese or what have you). Hell, even my homie Simon Loui's representin'! Plus a few of those underrated Danny Lee productions fromm the 90's (DIARY OF A SERIAL RAPIST, LETHAL MATCH) that rarely fail to please.

The Deadly Camp [HKMDB] - Another cheap horror movie

I just watched this a few days ago. It's actually WAY better than you might expect, and far more straight-faced than most HK horror flicks in it's budget range. It's shot on film, somewhat surprisingly, and actually comes about as close as a Category IIB movie can get to earning a Category III rating.

New Project Blair 1 - Simon Loui
New Project Blair 2 - Another one

Well, I just gotta find these now. Can't let Bearserk enjoy all the Simon-y goodness. :P

Freaking Spicy Killer - Another one which seems to be missing

Grabbed this one late last year, but haven't watched it yet, so I guess the race is on to upload screen shots! ;) I assume Kenny Bee had to appear in so much of this B-grade stuff because of his divorce??

Crazy Woman - and another one missing from the DB

This one's in the database under its actual title, FASHIONHOLIC, but perhaps there's more info to be found in the credits. I'd love to know why Buyoyo tends to make up titles from time to time...

OK, so I actually have something decent to look forward to :)
I only picked it up since I already got Deadly Camp 2003, and allthough they most proabably are not connected, I just had to have it :)

Nah, you can always upload images from it, I already got way to much stuff to get through anyway :)

Samuel Leung and Andy Tsang are in both movies, but I think they play different characters. Tsang, who's blessed with a rather unfortunate appearance, gives a DELIVERANCE-worthy performance in the 1999 version. I haven't seen the 2003 version yet, but the Category III rating does indeed make it tempting. If you're a completist, you'll need to track down Dennis Yu's 1980 thriller THE BEASTS, as THE DEADLY CAMP 1999 is a very loose remake/homage/whatever, and all three films share the same Chinese title.

Ok, see what I can do, couldn't find it on my first quick look through the onine sites I frequent, so may have to dig a bit deeper :)

Decided to get a few more titlles as well as I was going through the catalog of the site I've ordered from now, why not when I was at it going through their catalog, no point in stopping halfway through or what :)
So here are the titles I decided on getting, with these last ones I should have more than enough for months to come :)

Vampire Reborn - Sophie Ngan movie :)
An Evil Lover - nice cover
Pink Thief [HKMDB] - Guess this needs to be in the collection as well
Swagger Around - Emily Kwan movie
Snake Girl - Another Sophie Ngan movie
Journalist Story [HKMDB] - Good old Charlie :D
Sleeping With Two Sisters [HKMDB] - Seems this one is in need of some screen grabs :D
My Virgin [HKMDB] - Seems to be in need of some more info :)
The Peeper's Story 1 - The Tattoo Master - Sophie and Charlie getting it on
A Tragic Room [HKMDB] - Sounds like an interesting story, even got Sophie Ngan
Evil Instinct [HKMDB] - According to the plot description, this is a steamy erotic thriller, which should be enough for me :)
Seek Joys of Lover's Union - Cover looks nice enough :)
Fei Fung Night - Rather little info about this one to say the least
Police Love Affair - Need some "normal" movies as well :)
Legend of Lust [HKMDB] - Charlie is at it again
Snake Monster [HKMDB] - and again  he certainly gets around
A Lustful Night [HKMDB] - This one is in dire need of some more information
Hanky Panky [HKMDB] - Have to have this one in the collection just because of the title :)
Tender Killer - Another Cat.3 title which seems to be missing from the DB
The Barren Virgin [HKMDB] - and one last movie

There that should do it.

Oh, come ONNNNNN!!! You're killing me here!

Looks like I gotta start placing some orders at Buyoyo. Their shipping prices don't seem so bad, and you've provided me with some nice shopping lists!

(By the way, I think if I got a camera phone with decent enough resolution, I could make a Sophie Ngan movie, too!)

As to some of the others:

Pink Thief [HKMDB] - Guess this needs to be in the collection as well

This is pretty tame and dated stuff, and I find Lok Siu-fan to be an acquired taste in some of her films. My review is in the database.

Snake Monster [HKMDB] - and again  he certainly gets around

This is an interesting curio, but to appreciate it, you need to see WITCHCRAFT VS. CURSE, DEVIL OF RAPE and HUNTING EVIL SPIRIT first, and in the order I've listed them here. All four of these were directed or co-directed by actor Fong Yau and each steals footage from the one before it (Pauline Chan's rare extended sex scene from DEVIL gets reused in HUNTING a year later, and the film stock clearly doesn't match), with SNAKE MONSTER a veritable buffet of inserts from the previous three cut with newer footage of Fong's regulars Charlie Cho and Yeung Chak-lam. Quite a collection of tasteless, opportunistic trash, but they've all got their moments.

I saw this one years ago, and actually have a review ready to add:

"I picked this vcd up on the theory that no movie with such an uncompromisingly fantastic name could be bad. Well, we all make mistakes "

:-p

Yeah, they got quite nice prices, I usually place my orders with them and DDDHouse, even with P&P added to the cost they are cheap compared to to the inflated prices here in Norway, where asian movies usually costs about 200-300 NOK ($35-50 US), besides the packages are seldom checked by customs.

hehe  they're not exactly what one would call great art, but certainly can be entertaining at times :)

Haven't seen any of her other movies, but there are always the possibility of getting some bad with the good hunting for cheap obscure titles like this, if nothing else I will be able to add some more images to the DB :)

hehe  See if I can't hunt down some of the other tiltes at some later time, got HUNTING EVIL SPIRIT on my shelves here, so will need to see if I can find the two others somewhere.
