Yu So Chow comes from a family of actors. Her father was the famous Peking Opera actor Yu
Jim Yuen, and she apprenticed for female warrior roles in Peking Operas at the age of eight. She
made her stage debut at nine, when she performed Northern Style martial arts. In the Peking
Opera “The Legend of the White Snake”, Yu demonstrated her footwork with twelve
Red-Tasselled Spears. From 1948 onwards, she made a total of over 200 films, of which over
one hundred seventy were action movies, amongst which are “The Five Heroes’Deadly Spears”,
“Three Swordswomen from Northeast”, “Mythical Crane, Magic Needle”, “The Burning of the
Red Lotus Monastery”, “The Golden Hairpin”, and “Buddha’s Palm”. The rest of her
appearances are in Cantonese operas, detective stories and modern day action movies. In 1966,
Yu married with famous Cantonese Opera actor Mak Bing Wing. She retired from the limelight
after that.
